Week 13

How is CAI implemented?

Teachers should review the computer program or the online activity or game to understand the context of the lessons and determine which ones fit the needs of their students and how they may enhance instruction.

  • Can this program supplement the lesson, give basic skills practice, or be used as an educational reward for students?
  • Is the material presented so that students will remain interested yet not lose valuable instruction time trying to figure out how to operate the program? Does the program waste time with too much animation?
  • Is the program at the correct level for the class or the individual student?
  • Does this program do what the teacher wants it to do (help students organize the writing, speed up the writing process, or allow students to hear what they wrote for editing purposes)?
Teachers should also review all Web sites and links immediately before directing students to them. Web addresses and links frequently change and become inactive. Students might become frustrated when links are no longer available.
Writing programs are beneficial to writing instruction because they allow students to learn in a variety of ways and can speed up the writing process. With proper training, students can learn to focus on the message instead of the mechanics.

Week 12

 .

Three phases of CALL

Though CALL has developed gradually over the last 30 years, this development can be categorized in terms of three somewhat distinct phases which I will refer to as behavioristic CALLcommunicative CALL, and integrative CALL (cf. Barson & Debski 1996). As we will see, the introduction of a new phase does not necessarily entail rejecting the programs and methods of a previous phase; rather the old is subsumed within the new. In addition, the phases do not gain prominence one fell swoop, but, like all innovations, gain acceptance slowly and unevenly. [ICT4LT Editor's Note: See Section 3, Module 1.4, where CALL typology and Phases of CALL are discussed further.]

1. Behavioristic  CALL
The first phase of CALL,is recognized as the first phase of CALL. It  the audio-lingual method. This phase entailed repetitive language drills and practice activities.

2. Communicative CALL
The second phase of CALL,The focus of CALL in this phase is using the language or function. Computer provide context for student to use the language, grammar.

3. Integrative CALL
The teaching of four language skills including listening, speaking reading and writing.

Week 11

Computer Assisted Language Learning and English Language Teaching in Thailand: Overview
written by Attapol Khamkhien

The Development of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
Computer Assisted Language Learning came from computer-assisted instruction or CAI and computer-assisted language instruction or CALI. Have increasingly contributed to the enhancement of English proficiency in all language skills.

Three phase of CALL
- Behavioristic CALL
   The audio- lingual method
- Communicative CALL
speaking and writing. Using the language of functions rather than analysis of language forms.
- Integrative CALL
The teaching of four language skills including listening, speaking reading and writing.

Advantages and Disadvantages of CALL in Language Learning
Advantages

1. Students can have an opportunity to interact in one or more of the four core skills namely, listening, speaking reading and writing because they have to use or produce text meant for an audience in the target language, not the classroom. Moreover, teacher can use CALL to provide a variety of language learning resource and multimedia of dynamic and authentic input in all area.
2. Computer mediated communication help encourage foreign language learners to produce comprehensible output.
3. CALL is able to provide learners with the kinds of information and support that they requires to complete individual tasks.
Disadvantages
1. CALL is limited exposure to the target language input produced by native speakers.
2. High cost
3. Efficient network system in class.
