The Development of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
Computer Assisted Language Learning came from computer-assisted instruction or CAI and computer-assisted language instruction or CALI. Have increasingly contributed to the enhancement of English proficiency in all language skills.
Three phase of CALL
- Behavioristic CALL
The audio- lingual method
- Communicative CALL
speaking and writing. Using the language of functions rather than analysis of language forms.
- Integrative CALL
The teaching of four language skills including listening,speaking reading and writing.
Advantages and Disadvantages of CALL in Language Learning
Advantages
1. Students can have an opportunity to interact in one or more of the four core skills namely, listening,speaking reading and writing because they have to use or produce text meant for an audience in the target language, not the classroom. Moreover, teacher can use CALL to provide a variety of language learning resource and multimedia of dynamic and authentic input in all area.
2. Computer mediated communication help encourage foreign language learners to produce comprehensible output.
3. CALL is able to provide learners with the kinds of information and support that they requires to complete individual tasks.
Disadvantages
1. CALL is limited exposure to the target language input produced by native speakers.
2. High cost
3. Efficient network system in class.
